Bluetooth Tracker for Samsung Phones
I purchased the Solum Smart Tag in order to track my car keys, which I have a habit of misplacing. Since I have a Samsung Galaxy S24 phone, I looked for a tracker that was compatible with Samsung or Android. The Solum Smart Tag is considered a Bluetooth tracker. A Bluetooth tracker works when your phone is close by (up to 300ft). The tracker works with the Samsung SmartThings app from Google Play Store. Download and install this app on your Samsung phone. Open the app and with the tracker close by, it should find it automatically. Follow the prompts to add the Smart Tag to SmartThings and register the device. You can then name it and give it a location. To test, tap the Solum Smart Tag icon on the home screen. Click View Map on the Status screen. A Google map displays on the screen with a general location of the tracker. To find the tracker, tap the 3 dots (…) icon at the bottom of the screen to bring up the menu for the device. Tap the Ring Icon (looks like a musical note) and the Smart Tag will start ringing. Follow the sound to locate the SmartTag. The ring is loud enough to hear 50ft away. You can also tap the “Search Nearby” icon which will help you zero in on the Smart Tag. Both these features work well.Keep in mind, this is a Bluetooth tracker, not a GPS tracker. Once the phone and tracker are out of range from each other (about 300ft), they only remember the last place they were in contact. This can come as a surprise to some people expecting to get the precise location of the tracker in some remote unknown location.The Smart Tag comes with a CR2032 battery which according to the manufacturer lasts 300 days. I tried to remove the battery and had a difficult time opening the compartment. According to the manufacturer’s instructions, they instruct you to press the rear left groove and pull the battery tray all the way out diagonally. After repeated tries and much frustration, I was unable to open the tray. Finally, I used a small flat headed screwdriver to pry it open. They need to redesign this part of the Smart Tag. Maybe a push button to open the tray would be a better option.In summary, the Solum Smart Tag tracker is small and compact and works well for items that will normally be close to your phone (i.e. keys). It comes with a key ring attachment. Using the Samsung SmartThings app you are able to locate the tracker using a sound ping or the “Search Nearby” feature. The battery life is long. Changing the battery could be a challenge due to the difficulty opening the battery compartment.

Works about as good as the tile for finding keys or phone, which is hit or miss about 50/50. I’ve had the tile for about 5 years on my car keys and it is equal parts frustrating and helpful with its selective functioning. Like the tile, sometimes the Solum tag will ring across the house, sometimes it fails when right next to you. I guess bluetooth trackers are kind of a crap shoot and this one is no different. Pairs nicely with the smart things app.

In dense, urban environments this works very well. In more remote or sparsely populated areas, location updates may be less precise—that’s not a flaw of this product so much as the inherent limitation of the technology.Battery life looks solid out of the box, with an estimated lifespan close to a year on the included CR2032. Once configured, this really is a set-it-and-forget-it accessory—quietly waiting until the exact moment you’re glad you attached it. A practical, no-drama tool for Samsung users who want a simple safety net for everyday items.
